Electric Linear Actuators The electric Linear actuator is different from a normal rotary action due to the design which translated the rotary action into a linear action, i.e. push and pull. There are a number of different types of actuators, electric linear actuators incorporate and motor to provide the motive power. The main advantage of this type of unit is its ability to hold position. The units are fitted with an Acme screw which is specially designed not to back drive. A normal thread viewed in cross section is triangular in shape, reducing in thickness from the root to the tip. The acme screw when viewed in section is square. For faster speeds there is sometimes the need to operate with a ball screw, these are also electric linear actuators, however in this instance the unit can be back driven. If self stability is required then we can incorporate and specially designed breaking system which prevents back driving the system. The normal form of drive is from a 24v DC brush motor. These motors are ideal for electric linear actuators as they have distinct advantages. Namely they are low cost units which are made in large quantity, but are also simple in design and very reliable. |
