Lifting devices

Electric linear actuators are generally used only for push pull applications within an application where any side loading can be avoided, or is prevented by the structure of the machine. In an application such as lifting devices there may be the possibility of side loading or overhung loads being applied to the actuator. Lifting devices vary in many applications from Lifting tables where the actuators operate in compression to trap door application where the units operate in tension.

The issue of the side loading can be overcome buy mounting the actuator lead screw within a telescopic aluminium housing that can protect the driving element from side loads. This can best be archived with what is known as a telescopic column. Within the devices there are several pieces of aluminium which slide within each other; these sections are supported on linear guides which prevent the sections rubbing together. The linear guides within the lifting devices are adjustable hard plastic shims. Lifting devices tend to be incorporated in equipment which needs to be adjusted to the correct height for the operator; most of the applications are where there is considerable repetition to an operation and may cause RSI. The answer is then to incorporate the linear actuator as lifting devices give the operator the ability to adjust the height of the work station. Where these have been installed the fatigue to the operator is reduced as they can change the height for either sitting or standing operation.
